| Projects 2010 November 15: Alex van Warmerdam is awarded the second Johannes Vermeer Award On 15 November, Alex van Warmerdam, filmmaker, theatre maker, expressive artist, actor and writer received the second Johannes Vermeer Award from the then newly appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Halbe Zijlstra (Liberal Party). The laureate received the award because, according to jury chair Victor Halberstadt, in the Netherlands there is ‘one creative talent who for a long time has managed to rise above the artistic domain, and that is Alex van Warmerdam'. The award consists of a sum of € 100,000, a glass goblet made by artist Bernard Heesen and a book published especially for the occasion, Measured and Laboured: the Life and Works of Alex van Warmerdam, written by Joost Ramaer. More European Research Folk Culture Commissioned by the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie (the Cultural Participation Fund), the Boekman Foundation supervised literature search into policy programmes for the benefit of folk culture in Europe. More Cooperation with Turkey The Bilgi University in Istanbul, the European Cultural Foundation, the Anadolu Kültür foundation (an NGO aimed at the build-up and professionalization of Turkey's cultural infrastructure), together with the Boekman Foundation, started a cooperation in 2008 in order to realise a number of objectives. For instance, the libraries of the Boekman Foundation and Bilgi collaborated on the set up of Turkey's national library collection for cultural policy and management, which was largely concluded in 2009. The second goal was the set up of a permanent study centre for cultural policy and management, in order for Bilgi University to organise (inter)national activities and prepare publications. This too has been realised: on 20 October 2010, the head of the Boekman Foundation's library Saskia Leefsma was present for the official opening of this study centre, together with a great number of colleagues from Europe and Turkey. More June 30: Conference The Next Step: Community Arts in a Broader Perspective On Wednesday 30 June, 10 arts and cultural organisations joined forces on the beautiful campus of the University College Utrecht for the conference The Next Step: Community Arts in a Broader Perspective. Moderated by Ruben Maes, 200 (inter)national professionals gathered to discuss the influence of community arts on arts and cultural policy, research, vocational art education and art critics. Topics of this conference were amongst others the measurement of the effects of community arts, the education of new generations of artists and the role of independent art criticism in validating this type of art. More June 15: Boekman debate International Festival Cooperation: a must in many ways The publication of the summer edition of Boekman (83) on the subject of festivals led to the debate about international co-productions in festivals, held on 15 June 2010 in Theatre Carré and organised by the Boekman Foundation in collaboration with Holland Festival and CultuurCollege. Cas Smithuijsen, director of the Boekman Foundation, by way of introduction spoke about the internationalization of the arts festivals and the lack of financial support for artistic co-productions from the European Union. He advocated the revaluation of high artistic quality within the European regulations, enabling financial support by the EU for high-quality co-productions of art festivals. After all, these are not just a visiting card within Europe itself, but outside Europe as well.
